Environmentalists and Community Activists Renew Support for California LNG Study Legislation
The Ventura County Star [free registration required] reports today that some local environmental activists in Southern California are renewing their support for SB 412, a bill passed by the California State Senate in June that would require state officials to determine whether California needs LNG to meet the state’s demand for natural gas. The bill, however, faces opposition in the State Assembly where it has been shelved. The company backing the Clearwater Port LNG project proposed for offshore California, NorthernStar Natural Gas, supports the measure as a means to promote public involvement and give guidance to state regulators. The bill was held up in the Appropriations Committee last week by the Assembly leadership team.
Also, an editorial carried by the Los Angeles Times offers its support for SB 412, stating that state decision-makers require the proposed report to answer complex questions surrounding the authorization of an LNG terminal.
