Delaware Bill Would Authorize Mobilization of National Guard

A bill spearheaded by Delaware legislators permitting the mobilization of their National Guard has infuriated New Jersey politicians. The proposed law, stemming from a border dispute between both states over the siting of the planned Crown Landing terminal in the Delaware side of the Delaware River, would allow the governor to call for the National Guard “to defend against encroachments upon the territory of the State of Delaware.” The bill was introduced last summer and was recently approved by a committee in the Delaware House. It awaits action by the Full House. N.J. Assemblyman John Burzichelli, D-Gloucester, says the bill “is a tacit admission” that Delaware’s stance in the legal battle lacks merit. An Associated Press article published Saturday by The News Journal has the story.
