In a private meeting with U.S. President George W. Bush, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper reiterated Canada’s opposition to LNG tanker traffic transiting through Head Harbour Passage. Veterans Affairs Minister Greg Thompson told the Telegraph-Journal (New Brunswick, Canada) that Harper’s conversation with the president “indicates how important this is to us and to the prime minister, that he raised it at this high level.” Two LNG terminal proposals, Quoddy Bay LNG and Downeast LNG, would require LNG tanker access to the Head Harbour Passage in order to reach their respective sites.
