Anti-LNG Bill Seeks to Delay Sparrows Point
The Baltimore County Council is scheduled to vote next week on proposed legislation that would prevent natural gas facilities being sited within five miles of a residence. “If I’m going to make it another loop [AES’s Sparrows Point proposal must] go through to get that permit, that’s what I’m doing,” said the bill’s sponsor, Baltimore County Council Chairman John A. Olszewski Sr. (D-Dundalk). At a Council session yesterday, residents told the Council that “they’ll be living in fear the rest of their lives” if the terminal is built, while AES representatives said that the FERC approval process will address safety concerns. According to a FERC spokesperson, local anti-LNG legislation is one factor FERC would consider in deciding whether to approve the terminal. Details are in today’s Baltimore Sun.
