Alaska Agrees to Support Continued LNG Exports from Kenai
Reuters reports that Gov. Sarah Palin (R-Alaska) announced an agreement yesterday between her administration and Kenai LNG owners ConocoPhillips and Marathon Oil. The state has agreed to support an extension of the plant’s license to 2011 in exchange for a pledge by the companies to pursue new gas wells in Cook Inlet in 2008. Palin’s administration has sought to ensure that local utilities have adequate gas supplies to meet rising demand. Ultimately, however, the export license extension must be approved by the Department of Energy.
