Russian LNG Arrives in Boston

The Washington Post reports that a tanker carrying LNG produced at the Yamal facility in the Arctic Circle has docked at the Engie SA Everett LNG import terminal in Boston, Mass. Russian company Novatek, reported to be Russia’s largest independent producer of natural gas, is the majority owner of the Yamal facility. Although the U.S. Treasury Department issued sanctions in July 2014 that forbid financing for projects belonging to Novatek, the sanctions do not prohibit the purchase of LNG from Novatek’s Yamal facility. The article also states that the tanker’s LNG cargo “did not come directly from Yamal, but rather through a chain of companies and locations.”
