Draft Environmental Report Issued for Pacific NorthWest LNG Project

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency has released a draft environmental assessment for the Petronas-sponsored Pacific NorthWest LNG liquefaction and export terminal near Lelu Island, British Columbia.  The report concludes that the Project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects, taking into account the implementation of the recommended mitigation measures, on the harbour porpoise and as a result of greenhouse gas emissions.  The Agency concludes that the Project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects on “all other valued components” with the implementation of the mitigation measures.  The Draft EA Report will be finalized after a public and Aboriginal consultation period then will be submitted to the Minister of Environment and Climate Change for a final decision on whether or not the Project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects, taking into account the implementation of the mitigation measures that the Minister considers appropriate.
