The Globe and Mail reports that Canadian First Nations band Lax Kw’alaams has been offered C$1 billion (approximately $820 million) in cash over 40 years in return for the band’s consent to the Petronas-led Pacific NorthWest LNG export terminal project on Lelu Island, near Prince Rupert, British Columbia (B.C.), and the interconnected pipeline. The offer is from Pacific NorthWest LNG, TransCanada Corp.’s Prince Rupert Gas Transmission pipeline project and the B.C. government. The Pacific NorthWest LNG project is proposed to be built on the traditional territory of the Lax Kw’alaams.
