Senators Markey and Boxer Oppose Automatic Approval of Gas Exports to European Union
U.S. Senators Ed Markey (D-Mass.) and Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) have sent a letter to U.S. Trade Representative Ambassador Michael Froman urging him to resist efforts by the European Union in Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership negotiations to include language requiring the United States to grant automatic and expeditious approval of licenses to export crude oil and natural gas to EU nations. The letter states that inclusion of such language in an agreement may be counter to U.S. law, could drive up prices for U.S. consumers, and could cause environmental harm.
