U.S. Senator Lautenberg Introduces Maritime Security Bill
Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) on Tuesday introduced S. 1594, the Maritime Hazardous Cargo Security Act of 2007. According to Senator Lautenberg’s press release, the bill includes four main components: (1) diplomatic efforts to develop international standards for handling especially hazardous cargos (EHC); (2) mandatory training of port workers on the U.S. Coast Guard’s Incident Command System; (3) USCG development of regional response and recovery plans for resuming port operations following a security incident; and (4) authorization for the USCG to share EHC security costs with high-risk facilities.
