U.S. Reps Wish to Expand LNG Tanker Safety Study

U.S. Representatives Steve Israel (D-N.Y.), Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) and Tim Bishop (D-N.Y.) announced last week that  they have added language to the proposed 2008 Energy spending bill  that would require the Department of Energy to study the safety concerns surrounding LNG tanker spills. Specifically, the study will include an analysis of the risks of a cascading failure of the LNG tanks aboard a ship. Rep. Bishop explained the need for the study by noting that a GAO study released earlier this year “raised more questions than it answered about the consequences of an accident or terrorist attack.” The joint press release is available via Congresswoman DeLauro’s website.
