Study Says LNG Can Reduce High Midwest Natural Gas Prices
The steady rise in natural gas prices has particularly impacted industrial manufacturers in the Midwest, where prices in 2004 were 27% greater than the national average, according to a study released Wednesday. Donald Norman of Manufacturers Alliance, a trade group based in Arlington, Va., says that natural gas prices could be reduced by nearly 21% in the long-term, however, if the U.S. continues the current direction of constructing more LNG import terminals. “Liquefied natural gas provides the biggest payoff in the near term because you can actually make a measurable difference in U.S. energy supplies,” Norman said.
