Rhode Island Legislator Proposes Measure to Block LNG Vessels from Transiting Through Mt. Hope Bay
Rhode Island Rep. Douglas W. Gablinske (D) has proposed a measure (H 7014) that would prohibit any ship carrying a hazardous cargo from travelling under a bridge without a minimum clearance of 25 feet. As currently envisioned, LNG vessels travelling under the Mount Hope Bridge to the planned Weaver’s Cove LNG import facility would have five feet of clearance under the bridge. A representative for the Northeast Marine Pilots Association criticized the bill, suggesting that a minimum clearance of one to three feet is the general practice in the shipping industry. The Providence Journal offers additional coverage.
