Opponents Protest Weaver’s Cove Project at Rally
Several Massachusetts politicians yesterday joined a crowd of about 150 people outside the proposed site for the Weaver’s Cove LNG terminal to demonstrate against the project, which critics say could endanger nearby residents. “This is not because we don’t understand the need for energy; we understand the need, but we have to respect the desires of people locally who want to keep safe and do things that make sense,” said Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.). State Attorney General Thomas Reilly vowed to take exhaustive measures to ensure that the plan will not go forward. “We will work with every single law even if we have to craft new ones,” he said. Project developer Weaver’s Cove Energy released a statement in advance of the rally, saying that Fall River “was the best location because it offers a superior blend of the ingredients needed for an LNG terminal.” Today’s Herald News and Standard-Times report on the rally.
