N.J. Rep. Plans Legislation Barring LNG Facilities

Responding to Safe Harbor Energy’s plan  to build an LNG facility 19 miles off the New Jersey coast, U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-6) says he may introduce legislation that would prohibit the construction of such facilities offshore New Jersey. According to Pallone’s spokesperson, the bill aims to create a “clean ocean zone” that would cover waters from the eastern end of Long Island, N.Y. to the southern tip of Cape May County, N.J. “Over the past two decades, we’ve made great strides in closing the offshore dumpsites and cleaning up the ocean off Monmouth County,” Pallone said. “That’s why I find it disturbing that some company wants to come in and take a big step backwards by creating a huge artificial island to hold industrial facilities.” Details are in the Atlanticville.
