Mass. State House Hearing Held on Legislation Restricting Siting of New LNG Terminals
South Coast Today reports that yesterday the Massachusetts State House held a hearing on pending legislation that would prohibit the construction of LNG terminals within one mile of residential areas. According to the publication, this pending bill could be another obstacle for the Weaver’s Cove LNG terminal planned for Fall River, Mass. Prior to testifying at the hearing, Weaver Cove’s LNG spokesman James Grasso stated that “[i]f passed, this bill would most likely be deemed unconstitutional by the courts, since both activities, marine and LNG siting, are subject to regulation by the federal government.” Grasso also indicated that Weaver’s Cove LNG would appeal the U.S. Coast Guard’s ruling that the Taunton River is unsuitable for LNG tanker traffic.
