Legislation Proposed to Restrict Dredging Near Sparrows Point

Dundalk Sen. Norman Stone Jr. introduced legislation yesterday that would prohibit dredging of more than 250,000 cubic yards within half a mile of the Sparrows Point shipyard, where AES proposes to build the Sparrows Point LNG terminal. If passed, the measure would make it impossible to develop channels deep enough to accommodate large LNG tankers. The measure also seeks to prohibit the Maryland Public Service Commission from endorsing an LNG terminal project proposed for within two miles of a residence in Baltimore County. However, both Stone and a lobbyist for AES doubt the General Assembly will consider the bill since it is not on the leadership’s agenda. Today’s Examiner has the story.
