Industrial Projects, Environmental Concerns Spur Detailed Study of Cape Cod Seabed
In a joint effort between the State of Massachusetts and the U.S. Government, scientists are creating detailed maps of several hundred square miles of ocean bottom using advanced sonar and geological techniques. Walter Barnhardt, a U.S. Geological Service research geologist, said, “a lot of engineering projects like wind farms, LNG (liquefied natural gas) terminals, and pipelines are proposed to go into state and federal waters, but we haven’t had a good understanding of what the seafloor is like. This information can be a tremendous economic asset.” The Cape Cod Times provides additional details.
