FERC Chairman Clarifies LNG Terminal Review Process
During an interview with The Hartford Courant, FERC Chairman Joseph Kelliher clarified FERC’s role in the LNG terminal review process, explaining that EPAct 2005 does not deprive states of influence over siting decisions. “If we disapprove a project, it can’t be built, but we’re not the only body that has to approve an LNG facility,” Kelliher said. He also stated that FERC’s decisions on LNG terminal proposals are based on compliance with safety requirements, not consumer demand. Nevertheless, he warned that “attempts to block all energy development will have the very predictable and probably inevitable outcome of raising prices.” [Access to archived articles requires a fee.]
