EPA Requests FERC to Reexamine Environmental Justice and Other Issues for Freeport LNG Export Project
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 6 Office in Dallas, Texas, filed comments on FERC’s Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) for the proposed Freeport LNG export terminal near the Town of Quintana, Texas. EPA states that it “continues to have environmental concerns with environmental justice and surrounding communities; wetlands, indirect effects, and greenhouse gas emissions” associated with the project, and recommends that FERC (1) “re-evaluate the FEIS’s conclusion that the proposed project will not disproportionately affect minority and low-income populations in the project area” and work with the residents of the Town of Quintana to more clearly identify the proposed mitigation measures; and (2) consider in its decision making recent U.S. Department of Energy reports on induced gas production and greenhouse gas emissions resulting from increased gas exports. EPA’s comments can be found here, and the complete docket for the Freeport LNG export project can be found on eLibrary under Docket No. CP12-509.
