B.C. First Nations Host LNG Summit

British Columbia (B.C.) First Nations chiefs hosted a summit with Canadian Minister of Natural Resources Joe Oliver, Japanese Ambassador Norihiro Okuda and B.C.’s Minister of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation John Rustad to discuss ways to inform and involve First Nations in the decision-making process for proposed B.C. LNG export terminals. Oliver emphasized the importance of creating a positive relationship with First Nations and noted that the federal government has taken several steps to increase environmental protection of land affected by the proposed projects. Okuda stated that Japanese companies were interested in B.C. gas resources but “pressed for time.” Some First Nations chiefs on the other hand, wondered why the sense of urgency on getting the LNG terminals built.
