Hydropower for Planned LNG Export Projects Triggers Political Controversy in British Columbia

The Vancouver Sun reports that the proposed Site C hydropower project along the Peace River in British Columbia is causing political controversy. British Columbia Premier Christy Clark has said that she hopes the Site C project will be developed to power the planned LNG export facilities in the region, including the project proposed by Shell. If opposition from environmentalists and local residents prevents development of the project, however, the LNG facilities may have to use natural gas for power generation, which could threaten greenhouse gas-reduction targets set by the government.
