Congressman Asks Energy Secretary About Effects of U.S. LNG Exports

Representative Edward Markey (D-Mass.) sent a letter to U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu this week asking the secretary about the likely effects on domestic natural gas markets of exporting U.S. gas as LNG. According to Reuters, Rep. Markey’s letter underscores the concern that exporting natural gas may raise energy prices in the United States. Congressman Markey asked Secretary Chu whether the Department of Energy (DOE) could impose conditions on LNG export authorizations that would require companies to “halt or slow exports if DOE determines domestic prices are being adversely affected.” The letter requests a reply by January 31, 2012.
