MARAD and Coast Guard Begin Environmental Review of Safe Harbor LNG Deepwater Port

The Maritime Administration announced in the Federal Register today its intent to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement for the proposed Safe Harbor LNG deepwater port. Following the D.C. District Court’s December 8, 2008, decision upholding MARAD’s designation of New Jersey as an adjacent coastal state, both New York and New Jersey will participate in the project review and have veto authority over the terminal under the Deepwater Port Act. MARAD also announced open houses and public meetings in connection with the application scheduled for January 27 and 29, 2009, in New Jersey and New York respectively.
