Oregon Senator Requests Review of Kenai LNG Export License Extension

Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) sent a letter to Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman this week requesting a review of the June 2008 Department of Energy (DOE) order that extended the license permitting the Kenai LNG liquefaction plant in Alaska to continue exporting LNG to Japan. The letter asserts that the DOE did not adequately consider the Energia Costa Azul LNG terminal in Baja California as a potential option for delivering Alaskan natural gas to markets in the lower 48 states when the department reauthorized the export license. Senator Wyden also argues that these gas supplies could better further the public interest if they were used domestically. Reuters provides additional coverage.
