Boston Firefighters Union Critical of LNG Preparedness

Citing the recent difficulties encountered by an LNG tanker en route to the Everett LNG terminal, the Boston Firefighters Union publicly criticized Mayor Thomas M. Menino for what they perceive as the city’s lack of emergency planning for a potential LNG tanker accident. Specifically, the union claimed that the city has not created a comprehensive response plan, provided proper equipment, or provided firefighters with necessary training to respond in the event of a tanker accident. Boston’s director of the mayor’s office of emergency preparedness responded, saying that the city has worked with the U.S. Coast Guard to develop a detailed safety plan.
