State Department, Maine Senators Challenge Canadian Government’s Position

According to the Bangor Daily News, the U.S. State Department sent a letter on March 8 to U.S. Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins challenging the Canadian Government’s decision restricting LNG vessels en route to the proposed Downeast LNG and Quoddy Bay LNG import facilities in Maine. In response, the senators issued a joint response stating, “We certainly agree with the Department of State that Canada should be engaged with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s process and their input should be valued, however the Canadian Government does not have the authority to unilaterally suspend the right of innocent passage.”
