Maine and FERC Officials Respond in LNG Terminals Debate
Two articles in today’s Bangor Daily News track correspondence among the parties involved in whether to allow LNG tankers to transit Canadian waters to the proposed Downeast and Quoddy Bay terminals in Maine. FERC Chairman Joseph T. Kelliher responded to a letter from Canada’s Ambassador Michael Wilson informing the Ambassador that FERC intends to continue reviewing the applications.
The second article discusses both a letter by Maine’s Gov. John Baldacci to Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) requesting that the U.S. State Department intervene on the terminal developers’ behalf, and a letter from the Washington County, Maine, Commissioners. The County Commissioners declared, “We agree that the Canadian Government has a duty and responsibility to ensure the wellbeing of their citizens. However, it cannot, and will not, be at the expense of the people of Washington County.”
