More than 700 people attended last night’s FERC-sponsored public hearing on the draft environmental impact statement for the proposed Broadwater LNG terminal. A Broadwater spokesperson said that the terminal would provide additional natural gas supply and decrease utility rates. However, Connecticut State Rep. Tom Drew (D-Fairfield) said, “This proposal is not a solution to our energy problems, but a symptom of our energy problems,” and called for a national energy policy that reduces reliance on imported fossil fuels. The Day provides local coverage of the hearing.

In a meeting prior to the public hearing, three scientists told FERC officials that the DEIS overlooks critical issues necessary to conclude that the terminal would minimally impact the environment. The scientists previously criticized the DEIS before Connecticut’s state-appointed LNG task force. Read more in The Day. [Access to archived articles requires a fee.]
