Offshore Terminals’ Impact on Weaver’s Cove Unclear
Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney’s approval yesterday of two offshore LNG terminals may obviate the need for Hess LNG’s land-based Weaver’s Cove LNG terminal in Fall River, Mass., according to an attorney with the Conservation Law Foundation. “It will be impossible for (Hess LNG) to win a race against these two offshore facilities, which could be up and running by the end of next year,” she said. Fall River Mayor Edward Lambert, Jr. expressed a similar opinion and promised to continue opposing the Weaver’s Cove project. A Hess LNG spokesperson, however, indicated that the FERC-approved Weaver’s Cove facility still has a role to play in meeting regional natural gas needs, including seasonal peak demands. The Herald News has the details.
