Captain: LNG Security at Boston Harbor “Over the Top”

The Boston Globe reports on security measures in the Boston Harbor during the post-9/11 era. A captain of an LNG tanker en route to the Distrigas LNG terminal says that the security detail accompanying the vessel “is a bit over the top,” adding that other ports do not employ measures to this extent. Mike Hightower of Sandia National Laboratories cautioned against being too overprotective about the importation of LNG.  “What you don’t want to do is get so hysterical about LNG that you forget about other hazardous materials reported by water into Boston which could include oil, gasoline, chemicals, and other hazardous materials,” he said.
