Passamaquoddy Tribe Cool Toward Quoddy Bay’s Offer
The Passamaquoddy Tribal Council has not accepted $200,000 offered by Quoddy Bay LNG president Donald Smith, but has indicated it will continue to consider Quoddy Bay’s tax status. Smith reported offered the funds at Thursday’s meeting with council and tribal members, during which he proposed a plan that would allow the project to go forward in the absence of a tax agreement. Smith said that, despite the tax issue, Quoddy Bay is willing to “pre-pay some of the lease fees in advance” and in “good faith.” Details are in today’s Bangor Daily News, which suggests some council members may be uncomfortable that the offer coincides with tribal elections.
