Passamaquoddy Tribe and Quoddy Bay Disagree on Lease Payments

Passamaquoddy tribal officials claim that Quoddy Bay LNG owes the tribe $350,000 in lease payments that have accrued since December, and that it has not paid for experts to review the project’s FERC filings on the tribe’s behalf. Quoddy Bay project director Brian Smith says that the company’s lease obligations do not begin until the tribe completes agreements exempting Quoddy Bay from real estate and property taxes, an item that has stalled because of disagreement within the Joint Tribal Council. Smith also said that Quoddy Bay has reimbursed the tribe’s legal fees related to the agreement, and has not received additional requests for reimbursement.
