Experimental LNG Tanker Explosion Proposed
Arguing that studies predicting the worst-case scenarios for potential LNG accidents are inadequate, an undisclosed fuel company is working with U.S. Rep. Michael Capuano (D-Somerville) on a proposal to stage a real-life LNG tanker explosion to determine the outcome. “It’s just never happened so all the studies are based on scientific guestimates,” Capuano says. “I’d like to know the truth.” U.S. Coast Guard spokesperson Angela McArdle says an experimental detonation of an LNG tanker has never taken place, and adds that she does not know of any concrete plans for such a test.
