Qatar Liquefaction Projects to Boost U.S. LNG Supply
The Gulf Times today reports that construction has begun on liquefaction projects Qatargas 3 and Qatargas 4, with volumes targeting the United States. Supply from QG3, a project in which ConocoPhillips has a 30% stake, is expected to reach U.S. gas markets in 2009. LNG from QG4 is destined for the Elba Island LNG terminal through a long-term contract with Shell, which has a 30% share in the venture. Southern LNG, owner and operator of the Elba Island facility has proposed a major expansion of the import terminal, which likely will accommodate these new Qatari supplies. The first shipment is expected six to nine months after QG3 comes on stream. “We have strong emphasis on the development of infrastructure and capacity to bring LNG to these markets and both projects are now positioned to provide them with a substantial, reliable and stable supply of product,” according to a statement released by backers of both projects.
