Potential Vapor Cloud From Cabrillo Port Does Not Threaten Coast

The Associated Press reports on the Cabrillo Port revised draft environmental impact statement, which says that in the case of a two-tank (200,000 m3) intentional release from BHP Billiton’s proposed Cabrillo Port facility, heat from an ignited vapor cloud could be felt 6.3 nautical miles from the terminal but would dissipate before coming within five miles of the nearest coastline. AP suggests the project may face additional opposition as a result of the report. BHP Billiton spokesperson Kathi Hann acknowledged critics’ safety concerns, saying, “We take safety very seriously. It’s one of the reasons we decided to put Cabrillo Port as far offshore as it is.” The AP article is carried via The Sacramento Bee. [Free registration required]
