LNG Shortage May Encourage Industry Focus on Coal

The natural gas shortfall in the United States may prompt a reemergence of coal-fired power generation plants, according to John Strom, an industry analyst with Haddington Ventures. Strom said that high natural gas prices coupled with long delays in the development of LNG terminals may give coal an edge over gas. “Face it, $8, $9, $10 gas is going to provide a lot of justification for coal-fired generation when you go before the [Public Utilities Commission] to get a project approved,” said Strom.
