Legislators Urge USCG to Block Weaver’s Cove Project

In response to FERC’s refusal Monday to reopen the Weaver’s Cove record, Sens. Edward M. Kennedy and John F. Kerry, and U.S. Reps. Barney Frank and James P. McGovern, yesterday wrote a letter asking Admiral Thomas Collins to apply Navigation and Vessel Inspection Circular No. 05-05 to the proposed project. NVIC 05-05 sets out the Waterway Suitability Assessment process, and recommends considering risks to vessel safety and public health. According to today’s Herald News, the Coast Guard denied a previous request to apply the NVIC to the proposal because it had done “something similar to that before the NVIC was created.” Fall River Mayor Edward M. Lambert Jr. said he is “not satisfied by that answer,” and that he is disappointed that Collins chose not to meet with the legislators.
