Gov. Carcieri Calls for Increased Natural Gas Supplies
In an effort to combat increasing energy costs, Rhode Island Gov. Donald Carcieri has appointed the state’s first chief energy adviser who will manage an energy policy that calls for additional natural gas supplies. Carcieri encourages the construction of LNG facilities, but not in densely populated areas such as Providence. KeySpan LNG previously proposed to convert an existing peak shaving facility in Providence Harbor to an LNG import terminal. However, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission rejected the proposal in July 2005. KeySpan has appealed FERC’s decision. Governor Carcieri asserts that eastern Canada would be an ideal location for LNG development. An AP article carried via Providence’s NBC affiliate has the story.
