U.S. Coast Guard Officer Claims Canadian PM Disregarded President Bush’s Request for LNG Tanker Passage
Captain Charles Michel of the U.S. Coast Guard told the Canadian Press (carried via Macleans) that Prime Minister Stephen Harper “blew off” President George W. Bush’s protests regarding the United States’ request that Canada allow LNG tanker traffic to traverse the Head Harbour Passage. Capt. Michel noted that this issue is a good example why the United States should endorse the Law of the Sea treaty, saying, “Without being a party to the Law of the Sea Convention, we cannot avail ourselves of the dispute-resolution provisions.”
